I just bought two very old (~1985) VEB (ex Eastern Germany company) speakers which are HUGE. Of course such old speakers cannot be in good condition so I have a challenge here - to make them coooool Smiley

I started with the visual look first... As you can see the visual style is tragic-comedy:

http://philipp.web.aplus.net/speakers/original3.jpg
http://philipp.web.aplus.net/speakers/original4.jpg

Let's start - first I need to glue some ragged skins:

http://philipp.web.aplus.net/speakers/glue2.jpg

Then I must hide the ugly front panels with something nice:

http://philipp.web.aplus.net/speakers/front-cover2.jpg
http://philipp.web.aplus.net/speakers/front-cover3.jpg
http://philipp.web.aplus.net/speakers/front-cover4.jpg
http://philipp.web.aplus.net/speakers/front-cover5.jpg

... and here is the final look&feel results:

http://philipp.web.aplus.net/speakers/ready2.jpg
http://philipp.web.aplus.net/speakers/ready3.jpg

What's remaining? LOL look at the inside to see what's going on with the cables - it's a hell:

So my remaining tasks are:
1. Add the missing speakers (done, but no pictures taken yet)
2. Change all wires inside the case with better pairs
3. The sound receiver is an age relative to the speakers and it has some problems - must clean it and fix the deck too
4. Replace the old speakers (bass and middle) with new pairs (to be done at the very end). Oldies still works and that's why I am not in hurry Smiley

So guess what I'm going to do during the holidays Smiley

Just bought the new cable (pretty expensive, but cool):

Now the small missing speakers are pending installation:

Nice project Phil!
I have to say that old speakers are way better than the new ones... Atleast thats my opinion... Smiley
My dad has some old hitachi speakers from he got from a friend in `80s, they were new back then, in the early `80s... They were cool togethere with some not-high-quality-but-very-loud stereo amplifier, also hitachi  Cool

But then for my last birthday i got pair of Marantz speakers (HD 345)!! They are not as big as yours, but I can say that they are VERY mighty Cheesy You can hear me listening some heavy music 5 houses away Cheesy And now dad bought some great AKAI amplifier (triple A series (AAA)), first of the digital ones... Its so kewl you change volume level by touching it... And its 20 years old atleast Cheesy

I can make some pictures if you want to Smiley

Cheers headbangers! Cool

do it Smiley

I just get back myh amplifier from repair (total 25 EURO, which was pretty cheap) and now everything is ready - the deck is working, the potentiometers are new and the sound is totally clear... So total project cost:

1. Old speakers + amplifier: 50 EURO
2. Replacement of burned speakers: 20 EURO
3. Repair of amplifier: 25 EURO
4. New wires: 30 EURO
5. Wall hole materials, textile, etc: 10 EURO (max)

total: 135 EURO... Fair enough for huge speakers that was loud enough to be used for concerts of a Bulgarian metal band in early 90s Smiley

My pair of marantz`s cost 40euro Cheesy And they were in perfect condition. Bought on the used market from gypsies... Most probably stolen Cheesy
