nod32 is a good one (compromise between performance and usage of system resource). But its not free..
Norton and McAfee eat  lots  of system resource.
AVG and Avast are the free ones, but as you said not that effective..

I've tried a lot in my experience. I have the following conclusions for myself:

1. Never use Norton AntiVirus, because it will slow down your system terribly
2. Nod32 is very weak, if not incapable, in catching spyware/adware, but it advertises it
3. F-Prot is very friendly antivirus program and one of my favourites, but it catches viruses only - no spyware/adware
4. Avast is average quality
5. AVG is more than very good, but I don't like the interface
6. Kaspersky, like NAV, is taking a lot of resources
7. Trend Micro is average too

1. Never use Norton AntiVirus, because it will slow down your system terribly
- Norton is very suck.. it takes a lot of memory

4. Avast is average quality
- avast more bout skin and interface.. not good enought for Antivirus

5. AVG is more than very good, but I don't like the interface
- im satisfied too.. its faster but the virus definition was expired quickly

6. Kaspersky, like NAV, is taking a lot of resources
- not working with that..

Currently I am trying McAffee... It's hard to find working antivirus for Vista Smiley

P.S. F-Prot is maybe the first antivirus program for PC Smiley

I don't use AV bcoz i lazy to update it. hehe... (very" slow like dial-up)
So far my computer is safe... no more virus. Only bluescreen (i don't know about it)

only PCMAV & Killer Machine for local indonesian virus (ex: brontok)

for AntiSpyware, i am using AdAware professional SE.. its a free.. easy tracking bad cookies Wink
otherwise can use Spybot..

@pizzadox
if u didnt install antivirus.. the virus maybe didnt make a trouble for a while bcoz u dont have a firewall to block them but after a couple of weeks, the virus will spread and stay into ur system folder.. just wait and see.. ur computer will come unstable..  Wink
