[E2] Rockbox

What is Rockbox?(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Rockbox is a free software replacement for the firmware held on various forms of digital audio players (DAPs). Rockbox offers an alternative to the host device's operating system firmware (in many cases without removing the original firmware) which provides a plug-in architecture for adding various enhancements and functionality to DAPs which are not present in the original OS. Enhancements include PDA functionality, applications, utilities, and games. Rockbox can also retrofit video playback functionality onto DAPs first released in mid-2000. Rockbox also includes a voice-driven user-interface suitable for operation by blind and visually impaired users.

Rockbox runs on a wide variety of portable audio devices with very different hardware abilities: from early Archos players with 1-bit charcell-based displays to modern players with high resolution color displays, digital optical audio hardware and advanced recording capabilities. In many instances, rather than being run from flash memory, a minimal bootloader is installed in the supported device's flash which is capable of loading either Rockbox from the hard disk or, alternatively, the original factory firmware. Installing to flash is also supported on certain devices.

Released under the GNU General Public License, Rockbox is free software.

How to quit?
I have found a way to quit rockbox, loading some themes will cause rockbox to crash, so everything I want to quit, I'll load the specific theme to make rockbox crash and quit...

nope. must depend on blackhawk. it seems to be a problem with qtproxy(+keymap problem maybe). i dont have time to try things out. maybe u can try run rockbox and connect to telnet and try raising rockbox window or qtproxy..

I don't know what exactly is qt proxy.But when I installed exmms into my friend's E6,we had to put everything inside qt proxy folder on the root folder of SD and run the lin file from there.

Try this simple script...
Replace it in /mmc/mmca1/.system/QTDownLoad/rockbox folder.. You can kill Rockbox without telnet and reboot... Just use Kaleid task manager, close it, select Rockbox in menu and choose kill... :D Im excited with this...

Uhm... it's weird as it has the aac codecs installed, ain't there any way into making it open .aac files? you can see them if you configure it to see all files, but it won't open them...

Just tap Rockboxe2.mpkg and install it on SD then set it as root...Btw,this Rockbox can open images,but the size is decreased to 120x160..Then no way to go out.All keys don't work to exit in opening images...

Try VOL UP + PRESS JOYSTICK, this is the way to quit most of the rockbox applications...

RockBox is a media player,it doesn't play video..

though it does have an MPEG player plugin but i have nto tested it yet :)

@Andrei, my Katze3 doesnt have that prob, but when play a few song, there is a lot of soundskip for about a minute... After that moment, its going normal again...
@Amneto, yes, you can... Just use task manager from Kaleid or lock your keypad and press any key (maybe the voice key can too)... But the menu will going slowly...

nice playa but hey, it's still very hard to use it once the keys aren't well maped.

At least the music keys work well... ;) Btw exmms also work, but need keymap fixed (maybe can do a shortcut by numeric pad), im waiting for a fully worked exmms... I think it will consume less battery than rockbox... Rockbox force E2 too much, it makes my E2 heating (more than normal) even without overclock... Especially when playing + charging... :(

actually there are 7 keys in total coz this is a port from the iPod Video which has 7 keys on it which is menu,play,prev,forward,scroll backwards,scroll forward and select...

i've posted the keymap of which keys do what in the previous page... :)


yea RockBox seriously sux out lotsa batt...

roughly 4-5 hours from full batt to dead i've tested lol...

I test it for 3 hours non-stop and my battery bar left two bar... Two bar means 50% or less... So yep, it will drain from full to zero in 4-5 hours... :( I tested Exmms, it doesnt force E2 very much... At least, browsing menu when it runs still in acceptable speed... :) Maybe it can stand the power longer than Rockbox...

4-5 hours is acceptable for a pmp...

but i stil need to use it as a phone lol...

can i install this on my e2 stock ? I mean... if i istall this manually it will work ? if yes somebody can upload the files ?

u cant install Rockbox to stock E2, becoz execute file not support ur phone.. u must flash first..

i installed ZMPlayer to my E2 manually when i was using the stock fw so yea u can install it manually if u noe how lol....

just need to edit the CardRegistry file lol...

try out this EQ preset i've made lol...

put it in \.system\QTDownLoad\rockbox\rockbox\archos\.rockbox\eqs and then load it in sound settings Equaliser :) :P

but there are unofficial builds which supports album art but i've tested does not run well on the e2...

copy the files in the folders into the folders located at 'J:\.system\QTDownLoad\rockbox\rockbox\archos\.rockbox'

eg. files inside the 'wps' folder from the theme u DLed copy to 'J:\.system\QTDownLoad\rockbox\rockbox\archos\.rockbox\wps' and so on so forth~

pretty much the same method as installing a skin onto the e2 lol...

btw anybody tested the EQ preset i've posted on the previous page?

The installing guide is not working but i try to explore myself.. i just copy config.cfg,edit it to somewhere place then paste to original folders..

for Exit Button.. i just go to system then i press itunes button twice.. it works.. but if someone call i cannot hear thier voice.. they cannot hear too.. maybe it was a bugs..

for Album Art... what you need is, make the album folder (example: Incognito) put your songs here
2nd...the album art it self...try to search a picture, resize it to 100*100 and save as "cover.bmp" Copy the image to the appropriate album directory.

The Rockbox couldn't read embedded (tag of) album art....

another way of doing it is renaming the album art the same name as the song itself lol...

song name : Bokura No Kiseki.mp3
album art name : Bokura No Kiseki.bmp

anyway, i'll post my rockbox later. with few stuff corrected but no plugins support. but still, it's not a newly compiled rockbox, it's still blackhawk's.

@Arctu, can you compile the different rockbox? AFAIK, this rockbox is compiled from ipod video rockbox (320x240 screen landscape), but it must be better if it can compiled from gigabeat that has 240x320 which is vertical viewing... Is it possible? Bcoz it really not confidence to use landscape in E2... ???

no i cant. honestly, i don't know how to. i'm not a linux programmer. my fix was about the .rockbox folder itself only.

mine somehow fixed itself lol...

i think it fixed itself coz i tried to change the .rockbox folder to some other unofficial build and when i put back my old .rockbox folder some files are left behind and now the bugs are gone lol...

bugs fixed are like 'Settings Applied' when u apply a setting unlike last time which used to be '.m3u something' and the System menu is like what is in the manual and no more 'create playlist' which will make ur rockbox crash when u click it lol...

and also 'edit .wps' menu is there and also instead of 'browse .wps' its 'browse themes'

and fm radio it does not automatically quits when u enter it but still it does not detect anything lol...

if u want i can post up my whole .rockbox folder up here for u guys to try out :)

but at least now the submenus in the plugins menu are named accordingly like 'games','applications','demos' etc~

Any idea to quit from recording? I accidentally clicked the recording, back to menu with vol up keys, look at the now playing and there is recording progress bar... I have killed rockbox, reset setting, even have reboot, but the recording progress bar keep showing in now playing! How can i quit from this? ??? :(

Reinstall rockbox...

Good looking player, great functionality.  Plays folders as a playlist, screen timeout still in effect (unlike ZMplayer)

Needs a "quit" function besides using "Killrock" application.

Kills battery faster at this expense.

I suggest you use keagles rockbox script. I prefer that over rockbox as i dont need to install any more mpkg to make rockbox quit. ;)

no, the next, pause, previous e2 bottons do not work on rockbox, but u can change the songs with the joystc!

firstly..copy zip file to ur memory card and then extract it there..
after that.. execute file Rockbox.mpkg

after done.. copy folder rockbox in ur unzip then paste to root for mmc..

Quick review:

Pros:
+ way to finally close the program
+ works faster
+ Rockbox software keylock

Cons:
- Side Play/Next/Prev buttons don't work
- I liked the interface flipped the other direction (similar to E2Snes9x)
- Sound quality isn't as good as the stock mplayer
- When receiving SMS the phone continues to vibrate...

If there was a way to have the side keys working again (that's what they are there for), it would probably be the best audio player we have for our E2.

It works perfect on my E2. Its truly amazing, now rockbox works almost perfect. Big thx to blackhawk

It works perfectly. But there are 2 cons regarding phone calls when using Rockbox:-

1. When you receive a call, the screen will go black, but the call still can go through. But you cannot see who's calling you.
2. More laggy compared to stock player when receive call. Example: Using stock player, when I called, I got 3 seconds delay until my E2 rings. Using Rockbox, I got 5-6 seconds delay.

Anyway, Rockbox is a great audio player with lots of settings. The sound quality also much more good (with correct settings & good earphones) compared to stock player.

Portrait mode is excellent!  But my previous complaints still exist:
Side Play/Prev/Next keys need to work especially!

is anyone aware that sound in media player become smaller once you run rockbox?

Just install in phone, it just a couple of script to exec the rockbox bin in SD... If you want to install in SD, you can repackage the pkg, extract as tar.gz archive and package with "tar czf rockbox.mpkg rockbox" (for example)... :) or install manually....

Then where do i put the rest of the files in SD?

Directly in /mmc/mmca1/rockbox...

I've copied the files from rockbox-20071215-common and rockbox-20071215-e2 to /mmc/mmca1/rockbox, but it still can't start...

the point is I copy archos folder from common.rar using PC.
if I copy using phone file manager, the archos folder doesn't contain .rockbox folder.

I guess rockbox won't work on Extreme 2...
I'll flash to Titanium and try again....

It runs but you must edit the rockbox.lin and change the path to an ABSOLUTE PATH.



if you're using rockbox installed on your phone mem, change /mmc/mmca1 to /ezxlocal
that's all. It works for me. Don't ask me why lol

I tired playing some songs on rockbox through the phone speaker and found out that rockbox has much more bass than the stock player...

I've updated the first post and posted some photos...

1. Exit On Receive Call***(Though, the exit cause a black screen ><)
2. Prev, Play, Next button = Left, Left Softkey, Right button.. in other words, the music buttons works on the now playing screen ONLY. Also, Vol Up and Vol Down = Key Up and Key Down. (You can change the config in button.cfg).
3. New button.cfg*(replace at .rockbox folder I think), new keys: 257 - play, 258 - prev, 259 - next.

Hmm.. how weird... I don't seem to be encountering the others and so far.. it's only you who is having it.. its difficult to test something which only a few people encounter(in this case.. its only you)... Maybe you could debug(or test something out) yourself and report to me? Because for now.. I have not even the slightest idea of whats wrong.

Anyway.. be sure that:
1. You updated to blackhawk's version FIRST.
2. THEN replace his files with mine.
3. Replace your button.cfg with the button.cfg I attached above.

i mean the highets volume level in the old rockbox ( which is loud enough ) is same as about 1/6 of volume in the new

and i feel that the older rockbox have better SQ and also the newer rockbox have a very faint,if noticable,constant hissing,compared to the old rockbox :(

how is this last version installed? There are 2 files (common and e2, although I think just e2 must be installed) and then many files inside each one... so, how? :S

(Optional) Update your /mmc/mmca1/rockbox folder with my update and replace your /mmc/mmca1/rockbox/archos/.rockbox/rockbox.cfg with mine.

Well, it seems to work. But I'm trying to run doom and it says Incompatible model. Is this an installation issue, or it must say that?

Well, rockbox starts playing music and after 3 mins aprox. he freezes totally, the only solution is shutting down the phone. I updated all the libs, bins and configuration files.

Alright, blackhawk found a fix for incoming call problems. (no more black screen and will check for incoming calls even when minimised) All thank him please. (:

My new rockbox build in this zip *might* also fix the volume problems and the freezing. Please go on and try it.

0db is the max it can go withought haveing noticable cracking sound...

I have download it and tryed to install as a mpkg but doesn't works :(, then I tryed to install it same way as ZMPlayer, in this case appears on the main menu... but stills don't working, then i tryed 'extracting' the content on [SD:]\Rockbox\ and start it from rockbox.lin but stills the same... ¿what should I do?

somin up wit that, cuz it not workin it not loading. i av the older version and it workin fine except when the screen saver comes up it minimises but i cant bring it back up. lolz

@arctu, somehow the Rockbox freeze after a few hours play... I cant do anything except restart my phone... My suggestion is can you handle the freeze to make Rockbox quit itself? So we dont need to restart... :)

Bro, you need the common files and the rockbox installation itself. Check the prev posts. Then, you install the rockbox.mpkg and extract the common files to the root of your SD. Done.

I'm facing a problem with RockBox. I've installed rockbox.mpkg into phone, and copied the rockbox folder to the root of my SD. I've granted root permission as well. But when I press the Rockbox icon in the main menu, nothing seems to happen.

What can I do to fix this?

P.S. The phone doesn't allow me to install the mpkg into SD. It just says installation failed. So I can only install it into phone. By the way, I'm running on ROKR Ultimate 48P.

1st go to PhoneWareMan in your toolbox.. then select rockbox..set it to root..then press options and select move..then move it to card..then refresh

I have a problem (or bug) in Rockbox. I select Last.fm log to "Yes" but Rockbox only logs the first song i listened.

For example: I'm listening to an album. Press play for the first song and listen to 5 or 6 songs. But in the ".lastfm.log" file there is only first song.

I'm starting Rockbox and play the first song. In the second song I close Rockbox and start again. Play the second song. And it writes in the log. What's the problem?

Album art image BMP just rename for the album name of your song. Example:

This is how to make u'r rockbox can be instaled with easy in your sd...

First,,
rename rockbox.mpkg to rockbox.tar.gz
then tap it from e2 file manager...
Second,,
edit rockbox.sh with text editor or opera mini mod,,
change ROCKBOXDIR=/mmc/mmca1/.system/QTDownLoad/rockbox
then save it...
Third,,
move acrhos,lib, n bin folder from rockbox.comnon folder into rockbox folder...
Now u have all the stuff in one folder...
Last,,
u juz have to pack that folder into one mpkg file...
Type this command on telnet or terminal emulator

cd mmc/mmca1/
tar czf rockbox.mpkg rockbox

juz wait 4 a minute n u will see a new rockbox.mpkg
install n set to root...

You must put the 100x100 cover.bmp file to your album directory. I use it like that and it works. In the Album directory there are mp3 song files and cover.bmp

Where you put your music files? You must place the cover.bmp in the same directory with your music files...
For example:
your music files placed in /mmc/mmca1/MyMusic/album/song.mp3
your bmp must be placed in /mmc/mmca1/MyMusic/album/cover.bmp :)

the way i use is to create a folder for each album,put the songs in that folder and put the bmp file rename as 'cover.bmp'

Rockbox for E2 rocks!  I just found it runs hight bitrate wav files that the built-in player does not support. Great.

its a new lansdscape version..which come with the portrait one
about AlbumArt, i dont do anything ... just resize the image to 100x100 pixel and save it as cover.bmp --> remember case sensitive
and put the image inside the folder

try this... if you have couple of songs from the same album in one folder you can name the image with the album name. Just make sure your songs has the idtag.

example:
songs: Master of Puppets, Orion, Battery from the album of Master of Puppets
album art: Master of Puppets.bmp

make sure its 100x100 bmp

how can Rockbox play an WMA file... at first, it would play but the music is distored & not good to hear.. sounds like a long beep... i tried to replace the codec for wma but it would just skip all wma songs..

If u can install it on phone memory then maybe u get the separated installer n thats only the launcher. U must install again the main rockbox program on root SD.

i tried to install the rockbox that is with the blackstorm mp but with no avail im not successful in making it run in my e2 to i tried to install it in my phone memory or sd card and even installing it in the same time in both memory.

For volume use different equalizers, for themes/skins, go to rockbox.org, download any theme that matches the screen size (actually resolution, 240x320 or 320x240, depending if it's portrait or landscape) and then put the content of each folder on the one that matches the app (in your SD)

i use rokr e2 with F/W blackstorm, i finish installed  rockbox on my phone, but when i click the rock box it can't launch application. why does it happen..?

i dont know about installing it in the phone but i'll teach how i make it work on my blackstorm.
i used the portrait version i install it in the memory card after that i go to office tools>utilities>phonemanager from there
choose the rockbox and set it to root, after that i refresh my phone with phonemanager and then restarted my phone
and viola i have a working rockbox,
it also works on the landscape verson i already tried it on.

okay copy all the folder that contained the mpkg files that u installed. now it has archos bin lib folders and all that copy to a folder named "rockbox" (without quotations). Make that folder in your plain memory card. so :
sd> my photos, my music, my video... rockbox... my voice 
your rockbox folder should be along with these folders. simply put ti in sd
reboot
launch
enjoy
(get to know keys)

can someone post a the keys for the portrait version? i've been trying and to no avail. heres what i know so far, play is the middle button, up and down control volume and left and right control tracks...what goes back and are there any other controls that exist?

right soft key is quit to menu or back, left softkey is go to now playing.
to exit apps press ckey and left softkey.
thats it.
to quit press red key or lock keypad and press any key

I don't think it is as easy as edit the keymap. I'm not sure though since I never compile Rockbox before...

Hmmm.. It's hard compile..
I don't have tools of editing compile rockbox to E2 bcause i don't know tools for compile.
