Applications / Skype Now Available for Android Phones
November 12, 2010, 12:25:39 PM

Android: Skype just brought their free internet calling app out of its Verizon-only corner and opened it to the general Market. Anyone running Android 2.1 and above can make Skype chats, calls (Wi-Fi only, it seems), and sync Skype to their contacts.

Skype says it's tested its app on HTC and Motorola phones, and knows it's got a few kinks to work out, especially on the Samsung Galaxy S and other brands. When the app does work, though, it simply works, in a very Android way. Skype stays open in the background and remains accessible through the notification bar. The app can sync your Skype contact data to your existing contacts, and make Skype Out calls using your Skype credit. The disclaimer at the tail end of the Android download site states that Skype calls are Wi-Fi only in the U.S.; if you find otherwise, let us know.

Skype is a free download for Android phones running 2.1 firmware and above. You can grab it directly from the Market using the QR code below:
Applications / TweetDeck for Android now available
November 12, 2010, 12:22:26 PM

It was almost one year ago that we posted TweetDeck might develop an Android app and now the beta client is finally available. TweetDeck brings all your Twitter, Facebook, Buzz and Foursquare feeds into the same column and provides a slick UI that puts the key features at your fingertips. In order to receive the beta, you must visit http://www.tweetdeck.com/api/android_whitelist/ and sign in with your TweetDeck account. You will then receive an email with further instructions and a link to download the app.

The official YouTube application for Android was updated as a separate app, the Android Market. Unfortunately, only work for those who have Android 2.2 "Froy. It comes with many new features, as seen in portrait and landscape mode, channel information, can comment, "" Like ", sharing in Buzz, Facebook and Twitter, and many other things.

The idea of moving it as a separate app Android, as they did with Gmail and Google Search, is so that we can update these independent applications without the need to rely on the operator to perform a complete upgrade of the operating system. And obviously, is something that users benefit us greatly. Anyway, would also be good to start doing the same for older versions of Android, thus avoiding fragmentation of the systems.

If they're using a device Android 2.2, click on the link here from your phone to start downloading the application immediately and do not forget to leave your comments on the app.

Applications / [Market] Winamp beta for Android
November 12, 2010, 12:18:56 PM
Those who have more than 20 years we have used more than once in our computer one of the best music players that have been created, Winamp, is renewed and now launches its beta application for Android.

Within a few interesting features can be found in Winamp for Android are great interface and wireless synchronization. Obviously there are other players that may be more "cute" but the functions of Winamp and the simplicity with which they are carried out, are incomparable.

It comes with a widget that allows us to lock the screen and play our music without too many problems, and even allows us to perform a full sync of the music we have on our computer desktop (if you also use Winamp there.) In short, a classic 90's that is renewed for all Android users can go back to enjoy it.

Applications / Firefox Mobile for Android Now in Beta!
November 12, 2010, 12:17:08 PM

A couple of weeks ago I let you know about the Firefox for Android Mobile alpha releases. So, I figured I should at least let you know that it has finally reached the beta stage. Remember this is still by no means a final or perfect release. It is in "Beta 1" stage at this point and is likely to still have many many flaws that need worked out. It also should be noted that it is only in beta for ARM v7 processor devices. IE:
Acer Liquid E
Dell Streak
HTC Desire
HTC Desire Z (T-Mobile G2)
HTC Droid Incredible
HTC Google Nexus One
Motorola Droid 2
Motorola Droid X
Motorola Milestone (Verizon Droid)
Samsung I9000 Galaxy S (AT&T Captivate, Verizon Fascinate, T-Mobile Vibrant, Sprint Epic 4G)

If you have an ARM v6 device, you still will have to deal with alpha build "nightlies", which have a tendency to crash and/or not work at all on some devices. Here is the Mozilla Wiki Page for anyone who is interested in beta (or alpha for some devices) testing.

The Motorola Droid Pro on Verizon isn't what we expected: It's a like a Motorola Droid, but with a BlackBerry keyboard bolted on the bottom. Or like a BlackBerry Torch that's permanently stuck open, running Android. Take your pick. Weird.

The Droid Pro's running Android 2.2, and it's a world phone, so it's definitely aimed at the dissatisfied BlackBerry user looking to make a switch. More on it as we get it.

Update: Okay, official specs from Verizon: 3.1-inch screen, 1GHz processor, 4GB memory, 5MP camera (but only "DVD quality" video, 3G hotspot powers, DLNA compatibility. For the suits, it's got QuickOffice pre-loaded for Office docs, remote wipe and AuthenTec IPSec multi-headed VPN integration, with device and SD card encryption coming early next year.
General / Motorola Defy coming to T-Mobile
October 06, 2010, 11:49:26 AM
Source: cnet.com

On Monday, Motorola introduced its latest Android handset for T-Mobile, the Motorola Defy.

Already announced for the European market, the Defy is an updated, sleeker version of the Motorola i1. The ruggedized handset is water resistant and dust-proof, and it has a scratch-resistant 3.7-inch WVGA touch screen.

Motorola is shipping the Defy with Android 2.1 and Motoblur, it also has a 5-megapixel camera with flash, DLNA support, Flash Lite-enabled Web browser, and Moto's CrystalTalk Plus technology for clearer calls. Motorola did not reveal the phone's pricing and release date; however, according to the company, it will be available in time for the holiday season.

If you want to get a peek at the device, the Motorola Defy will make its official TV debut on Monday's episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show." What are the chances everyone in the audience gets one?

Droid/Droid X/Droid 2 / Droid X Video Review!
September 02, 2010, 02:05:48 PM

Here's a quick review of the Droid X's video streaming. I am not sure if you can tell but the Droid X does really well at 720P HD recording, I will have more of my personal videos up later.

Source: DroidX.net

Yes, the Droid X can take some great 720P HD videos in complete darkness using its 2 LED flashes, which are built in to the MotoBlur camera software. I took this video while in the bathroom. Well, let me just stop there.

Droid/Droid X/Droid 2 / How to Root Droid X!
September 02, 2010, 02:02:20 PM

For those of you who want to hack your Droid X for real, you will first want to root it.

Rooting your Droid X gives you "full" control over your phone including being able to install custom ROMs, 3rd party apps, free wifi tether, and a whole lot more.

If you are willing to take a risk and take advantage of what a rooted Droid X offers, start by following our step-by-step directions here on Droid X Hacks:

1. First, you will want to install Android SDK. After unzipping the SDK files, put it in a folder easy to remember such as C:\sdk for windows and /sdk for Linux and Mac.

Make sure you also have java installed and run the SDK_Setup.exe (for Windows), which will allow you to update the Android SDK with ADB, USB drivers, and stuff you will need.

2. Once that is done, you can connect your Droid X to your computer.  Make sure your Droid X is in "PC Mode", not "Just Charge"!

3. Go on your Droid X and go to Settings->Applications->Development and make sure "USB Debugging" option is checked ON.

4. (Windows ONLY) For Windows systems, you might get a "pop-up" saying driver was not installed correctly.  You can update the driver by pointing the driver update to the usb_drivers folder in your SDK folder such as c:\sdk\usb_drivers.

4. Unzip these files into your SDK tools directory such as c:\sdk\tools for Windows or /sdk/tools for Linux/Mac.

5. Open a command prompt by typing "cmd" under Start->search programs and files in Windows and for Linux/Mac, open a terminal.

6. Next browse to your SDK Tools folder by typing "cd \sdk\tools" for Windows and /sdk/tools for Linux/Mac

Type the following:

Quoteadb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
adb push su /sdcard/su
adb push busybox /sdcard/busybox
adb push exploid /sqlite_stmt_journals/exploid
adb shell

*Tip – If you get errors for above commands, try doing "adb devices".  If no devices are found, that means you need to make sure your Droid X is in the mode "PC Mode" and drivers are correctly installed for Windows.

7. Once inside the shell type:

Quotecd sqlite_stmt_journals
chmod 755 exploid

8. Go back to your phone immediately and toggle the WiFi off and on.

9. Type "rootshell" and type "secretlol" for password.

10. You should now be in "super user" mode, you should have a "#" instead of a "$".

11. Next, let's make root permanent, and type:

Quotecp /sdcard/Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
cp /sdcard/su /system/bin/su
cp /sdcard/busybox /system/bin/busybox
chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox

12. Next, exit out of the root shell and try typing "su":

13. Go back to your phone and the Superuser app should ask you for permission, hit "Allow".
14. If you gotten to this point, congratulations, you've rooted your Droid X!
Droid/Droid X/Droid 2 / Errors while rooting Droid X?
September 02, 2010, 02:00:01 PM
If you get a blank screen for the Superuser app for some reason or "Permission denied" error, you can re-install the su file like this:

Quoteadb shell
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
rm /system/bin/su
cp /sdcard/su /system/bin/su
chmod 4755 /system/bin/su

Then try:

You should get a Superuser app pop-up on your phone now.

This is what happened to me while I was rooting my own Droid X but by erasing the su app and copying it again solved it.

Make sure you don't update your Droid X to the latest OTA update as it could block your root access.

Also, here's a video I took while rooting my own Droid X, these are not the whole directions as I kept running into problems, getting stuck but in the end I did root my Droid X: (It will be helpful for those of you who have never rooted an Android phone before.)

For those of you who want to get free wifi tether like the Verizon Mobile Hotspot but for free, you can do it by rooting your Droid X then installing the Android WiFi tether app.

How to Get Free WiFi Tether Mobile Hotspot on Droid X!

1. Root your Droid X.

2. Browse to the Android WiFi Tether download page and download the latest .apk file.

3. Install the app and open the Android WiFi Tether app.

4. Make sure to set your app so "WiFi encryption" is enabled.  I've found that if it's not enabled the wifi tether app will not work.

5. Enjoy free wifi Mobile Hotspot on your Droid X.  Of course, the Verizon Mobile Hotspot app is a bit better as it's a full "wifi" feature while the Android WiFi Tether works in "ad-hoc" mode.

Folks over at AndroidCentral have done a great benchmarking test showing the differences between the new Droid X, Evo 4G, and the Nexus One.

The Droid X and Evo 4G both run Android 2.1 while the Nexus One is running the newest Android 2.2 Froyo, which provides a big boost in the phone's performance.

The Droid X and Evo 4G were about the same where Droid X edges out Evo 4G by a bit while Nexus One clearly wins the benchmarking test with whopping performance boosts, all coming from the Android 2.2 Froyo.

You can expect for both Droid X and Evo 4G to be upgraded to Android 2.2 Froyo later this year. Once that happens, there's should a little difference in performance between the 3 phones as all of them use a 1Ghz processor.
